frank gehry: beekman tower / new york by gehry now complete

frank gehry's first ever residential structure is now complete. located in manhattan,
the unit entitled 'new york by gehry' (formally known as 'beekman tower'), is the
tallest residential tower in the western hemisphere.

standing 870 feet tall, the building looks to reinterpret the classic design language
with a tower that alters and impacts the dense city skyline.

the exterior facade looks like it is being blown by the wind

undulating panels of stainless steel clad the structure, creating a dynamic exterior
that transforms with light as the day progresses. the unit - with gehry's iconic use
of form and material - has a sense of constant movement and appears as though it
is blowing in the wind.

the rippling form is evident on the inside as well where private units feature
curving walls and windows that extend into the sky.

designboom previously documented the construction of the 76-story project,
which has faced much controversy and was almost cut to half its size in hopes
of reducing its high construction costs in a struggling economy.

beautiful! simply beautiful
vladimir   03.22.11
beautiful...?
zeronergy   03.22.11
boring
juliano   03.22.11
no body ask himself why Gehry use these shapes?
Why he made this architecture while it lost it's geometry?
I think this is not real architecture
mohd rabi   03.22.11
Pas bête, il a pas dessiné sa montre...
maupado   03.22.11
@juliano

...boring? Are you kidding?

Gehry's is the only interesting building in the context! Just look at the surrounding "architecture" in the photograph... The surrounding serious architecture is what's boring!

Gehry may not be the most profound architect, but at least he's being playful.

He's one of the few architects who have proved life can be fun, mingling childhood naïveté with professionalism.
CROFTdesign   03.22.11
This man is ruining architecture.
He is completely ignoring all the principles that made the works of Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, Mies Van de Rohe, etc. so amazing. Yet, the average person would probably put Gehry in the same realm as these architects. It's sad.
ed   03.22.11
what has geometry has to do with architecture?
maybe step out of your comfort zone once in a while, out of your zelfmade box. was gaudi an architect?
cj   03.22.11
different....looks like the ripple/wave effect on water...I think I like it
Dr. Design   03.22.11
well said @cj...
the very people who oblige by the principles of mies and frank llyod wright are creating what is arguably the most boring of all modern-day architecture.
chris   03.22.11
this is brilliant. I love how he makes people think, love it or hate it, the fact that you are reading this article shows that humanity isn't entirely lost, keep reading and learning brave soul, maybe some day you will understand him :)
TB   03.22.11
Bien plus subtil que ses derniers travaux (clinique de Cleveland entre autre), j'adore!
alex   03.22.11
It is playfull, but ugly. But looking at the discussion, I do agree that architects have been quite squared and boring for the past 100 years, its nice to have different things in a ortogonal world, but this thing is not nice.
mr. mr.   03.22.11
Two lessons for aspiring designers from Mr Gehry; Never worry about the cost of construction (that's someone else's problem) and never, ever, worry about the window cleaning.
JAH   03.22.11
I think Gehry must have done a fair whack of acid.
Device222   03.22.11
why aren´t there any fotos from the inside? Seems he just decorated an ordinary scyscraper.
myfezazi   03.22.11
It appears like vertically rising waves... very cool!
David Radovanovic   03.22.11
Excellent renovationproject ;-))
Imagine   03.22.11
impressive how it creates something so original that looks so boring.
IFFZB   03.22.11
good design
awful architecture!
Gehry as Hadid as all the all the other architects payed to present theirself in a extra-ordinary recognizable way..
teo   03.22.11
in my opinion....if you take the building piece by piece (like the detail photos) its pretty interesting and original, but if you look at it from distance its kinda simple. The facade is Gehry`s unique style...but a it one we all know it...so its kinda boring
Rodut1112   03.22.11
One thing is to be playful and another thing is wanting to be playful breaking the order with small and weak gestrures that apparently have nothing to do with the interior... If you want a playful building you have to make playful starting from the inside to the outside, not forceing something "boring" and straight to look "different" with small changes and cruves on the facade because it simply looks silly, vanal and capricious.
Pierre   03.22.11
Umm... Now. It's boring.
felic   03.23.11
A kinder, gentler Gehry? Personally, i applaud it.
Heather   03.23.11
... any drawing ? concept, sketch, playful model, construction, anything other than photograph... all i can see is 2d... i wanna fell whats inside please, so itchy to know
giga6164   03.23.11
It is, in fact, absolutely fantastic how he took something so boring, as a skyscraper and made it so interesting. looking from distance, the texture of the facade is beautiful. natural, refreshing...
laBARh   03.23.11
I think all architects are to stiff and rigid. Very few can be called creative. As for the Modernists, I think that is boring now a days. That was then this is now, at least Gehry is doing forms that think outside the box. That is a relief, and it is compelling to look at, give the skyline a bit of interest.
ABC   03.23.11
It's the same old thing Gehry always does. There's nothing new here. No to mention it still lacks functionality. Look at aqua tower, it's creative and different, and the shape is a functioning part of the building. Here most of the facade is purely ornamental.
mly   03.23.11
Studio Gang did a better one, that actually has functions to it as well. But aesthetically this one is pretty neat.
Bucky   03.23.11
Make him stop...

...please!...
Marco Porto   03.24.11
People who are afraid of change criticize Gehry. The guy is a genius. His buildings are living sculptures. Frank Lloyd Wright would bow down to Gehry and likewise. He is enhancing architecture. I believe he grasps the fundamentals of geometry and beyond. Organic Architecture WOW!!!
Korby   03.24.11
This is what happens when you let people with Parkinson's disease draw buildings.
Andy Bee   03.25.11
I think he's just so much influnced by the form of undulating water and fish...I love arts, and I would also love Gehry's works if they are sculptures. However, I really don't consider his works as real contribution to the architecture profession. His work could only sparkle in an peaceful and normal urban context which he apparently has no interest in helping to create. And that's why I always appreciate works of architects like Zumthor and Siza more.

When you’re trying to sell your home the ability to appeal to a buyer is your main goal. http://freshome.com/2010/10/18/10-tips-to-consider-when-hiring-a-home-stager
In this realtor link (New York by Gehry), the architect performs in a clip. This a matter of history of architecture and the role of these professionals towards society. An architect for all
st   03.25.11
Is it the tallest building in New York?
SHRIDHAR   03.25.11
I can't imagine what LC stands for, being a niche of some kind and also PC, found on this plan

viewer   03.25.11
it's not ART, it's not ARCHITECTURE - it's just a distorted building for no reason!!!
architect   03.26.11
No one sees it? look at the shot of the building with the Bridge in the foreground...then do this google search "view of the twin towers from the Brooklyn bridge" if his building isn't an homage to the twin towers, well then I'll quit my job...now if Frank admits to this...well, I'll have to call him, it's been awhile anyway...
Mr P.ink   03.27.11
Mr. Gehry, how are these highly customized panels enhance the residents daily live inside? Will the building still function with these regular panels instead of these wavy ones? Why do you need it? What is this form about? Is it responding to the sun or the wind? Are you merely selling this "look" as your Starchitect brand? Are you jeopardizing your client's welfare to satisfy your maniacal ego? Do you know you're distorting public opinion of what respectable architecture should look (and cost) because it's not.

Architecture is not art but you can approach architecture artfully. There is nothing artful about your approach.

Artful Adjective 1. Clever or skillful, typically in a crafty or cunning way. 2. Showing creative skill or taste
MC   03.27.11
it's just ordinary box tower, with an intern happily played with the ripple on the surface :)

no substantial approach to the tower
peppy   03.27.11
I like!!
Leeya   03.27.11
I like the building, did someone see the video?? what he says?? I think is beautiful, is different, and I am sure it works because he is talking about people inside, about how is their experience from inside. And even if it wouldnt be like that, is different, is not the normal flat shape... I may not like the top, how it finish, but probably this is how THE ARCHITECT wanted. I Like it!!!
Leeya   03.27.11
Ornamentation and crime... nonsense. This building makes me grin. It adds to the environment, improves the surroundings. Its makes the lay-man smile and points a finger at the intelligentsia... it makes us talk/discuss/argue, in a dialogue that's so often missing. This is no bad thing! Keep it going Gehry !
idj   03.28.11
well this is no longer interesting, we have seen it before, and it did not come out nice on this high rise structure. i think Frank needs to move on futher or retire.
