multidisciplinary in function, the centre consists of multiple pavilions that host
a 1000-seat auditorium, museum, cinema, meeting areas and conference halls.
a corkscrew shaped structure with a visible spiral staircase provides a look-out point,
offering views over the estuary and the city. a three-storey dome accommodates
exhibition spaces for  art work of many media. the expansive public plaza connecting
all the structures will host a number of entertainment and cultural activities
throughout the year.

having created a number of cultural facilities throughout the world including
carnegie hall and ravello auditorium, neimeyer has called the center his most
important work in europe.

looks a little bit the corporate architecture of Empuria Brava,
a spanish holiday resort as well, built in the early 70ies
boney   03.27.11
amazing
jindrinsky   03.27.11
somewhat beside the point but: 103 years of age? how interesting is that?
marc   03.28.11
looks like an airport???? sorry but he is doing the same everywhere with no respect for the site
max   03.28.11
that was good architecture - 50 years ago - ??? - why in 2011 - sorry Aviles
me   03.28.11
simply and plain, outdated and uglyshly minimalistic.
marczinger   03.28.11
I guess the client was happy with this and I like it to a point but I also thought it looked outdated which might sound a lil strange since it a modern structure. I guess its the way the concrete has been used.

The surfacing on that column looks exactly like the surfacing on structures forming the royal festival hall and Hayward gallery down on the Southbank in London which as someone pointed out was great in the 50's. Great architect though and gd on him for still working as a centurian.

Sorry and respect to Niemeyer, but personally think this is way too outdated.

The client got satisfied, ok, but was the client a "normal" client, looking for the best or was/is he a fan of niemeyer? Because there´s a difference and looking at the final result, the client is a fan of niemeyer.

To me this work was made because of the name nieweyer has, not because of a trully great work of art, like I said, I respect his work, but I think he lost the train of "awesome arquitecture" few decades ago.
Sorry   03.28.11
Critics here who find ON's style dated miss the point. Great artists have a recognizable style or aesthetic that, at best, transcends trend and time. This cultural center could be quite amazing, once in use.

the same architecture, no mater where is it, no mater when it happens.

as a brazillian, and like many fellow countryman's who think like me, definitely we're tired of seeing this man overshadowing our country.
over 50 years brazil is kwon as a masterpiece of modern architecture and we will not have our contermporary production recognized untill this man continues to make monumental white elephant's where he wants saying that it was inspired by a rio de janeiro mountain and a naked woman...

come on, cut that... this only happens because of these bastards politics who keep showing their power by paying famous "architects" to sign their plazas...
