'centro niemeyer' by 103-year old brazilian architect oscar niemeyer celebrated its
grand opening this weekend in avilés, spain. the first project by the architect in spain,
the cultural project aims to serve as an international reference point in the production
of artistic content.

multidisciplinary in function, the centre consists of multiple pavilions that host
a 1000-seat auditorium, museum, cinema, meeting areas and conference halls.
a corkscrew shaped structure with a visible spiral staircase provides a look-out point,
offering views over the estuary and the city. a three-storey dome accommodates
exhibition spaces for art work of many media. the expansive public plaza connecting
all the structures will host a number of entertainment and cultural activities
throughout the year.
having created a number of cultural facilities throughout the world including
carnegie hall and ravello auditorium, neimeyer has called the center his most
important work in europe.

The surfacing on that column looks exactly like the surfacing on structures forming the royal festival hall and Hayward gallery down on the Southbank in London which as someone pointed out was great in the 50's. Great architect though and gd on him for still working as a centurian.
The client got satisfied, ok, but was the client a "normal" client, looking for the best or was/is he a fan of niemeyer? Because there´s a difference and looking at the final result, the client is a fan of niemeyer.
To me this work was made because of the name nieweyer has, not because of a trully great work of art, like I said, I respect his work, but I think he lost the train of "awesome arquitecture" few decades ago.
Con las baterías de cok junto a esta nueva edificación, alguién va a sacAr provecho de la continua limpieza de sus cubiertas. Y bueno... el entorno absolutamente demacrado de vías y carreteras, ha de ser corregido ya. En ese momento, ahí ya si, se habrá acabado este centro...

over 50 years brazil is kwon as a masterpiece of modern architecture and we will not have our contermporary production recognized untill this man continues to make monumental white elephant's where he wants saying that it was inspired by a rio de janeiro mountain and a naked woman...
come on, cut that... this only happens because of these bastards politics who keep showing their power by paying famous "architects" to sign their plazas...
