hiroshima-based atelier suppose design office has sent us images of their newest project 'house in hidaka',
a two-storey private house in saitama city, japan. plugged into the natural topography of the site, the design
seeks to establish a direct relationship between the land and the dwelling by having the surrounding hills
extend out from mid-height of the living space.

facade treatment
composed of two volumes stacked on top of one another, the ground floor is a transparent box wrapped in
glazing on all its sides. hosting the public programs - entrance, kitchen, dining, and living - the space is
tied to the panoramic view of the site. built-in components such as a long table, shelves, and a bar surface
is incorporated into the built-up foundation of the house, which protects the partially-buried mass from
the pressure of the soil.

interior view
the upper volume, which covers a larger area than the level below, features a more solid expression,
wrapped in panels of grey-washed timber. it administers a circuit-like circulation route by arranging
its rooms on the parameter of the floor. in order to maintain the linear sight line of the space, the centrally
located bathroom is encased in glass. the second storey retains its continuity to the rest of the house
through two large voids that overlook the space below.

enclosed with a windowless facade, the exterior of this dwelling discreetly lifts from the ground to introduce natural light into the living spaces.

contained within a discreet rectangular volume, a ground layer of sand transitions from the entry yard to the interior of the home, dissolving the distinction between the external and internal environments.
