danish practice henning larsen architects has won the competition for the extension of
'herlev hospital', a 52,000 m2 project that will consist of a new emergency department and
maternity services centre. the winning team, which includes the architecture companies
friis & moltke, brunsgaard & laursen, the enginnering companies NNE pharmaplan and orbicon,
consultants norconsult and landscape architects SLA, beat out five other international consortiums.

comprised of three ring-shaped buildings with rectangular bases, the project puts focus on
the notion of 'healing architecture', creating a number of inviting outdoor spaces in
the interstitial zones between the structures. the new extension is a down-scaled and
contrasting element next to the 120 meter high rectangular expression of the existing hospital.
'the project powerfully unites building design and landscape into an architectural whole
providing patients, relatives and staff with the experience that focus is on the individual.
the project must be emphasised for its high and well-argued ambition level for healing architecture,'
says lars steffensen, partner of henning larsen architects.

outdoor space
the human-scaled design features a number of courtyards, green roof gardens, and a large central park that will
fully integrate the nature with the new hospital. construction of the extension will start in may 2014 with a
projected completion date of october 2017. a later planned phase includes a patient hotel, conference facilities
and a research school, among others.
