‘atelier c’ by french practice avignon-clouet architectes is a storage unit and sewing workshop in nantes, france. located on a slim site flanked by neighbouring structures, the design features an unassuming street face which reveals a surprising interior which funnels into a garden out back.

measuring 2.8 m by 13.2 m, the project is wrapped in a thick, matte rubber grating. lending no visual access from the street, the private facade opens up via a large set of accordion doors. a spacious garage space is revealed with a tapered set of walls constructed out of large sliding panels covered with multicoloured oilcloth. the void space behind the angled corridor accommodates storage space as well as the staircase to the upper level studio.

coordinating with the roofline of the neighbouring architecture, the studio is defined by a deep pitched roof with two sky lights. the studio space benefits from both natural daylighting as well as a generous ceiling height, lending an enlarged sense of space.
