construction for 'maritieme + jutters museum' by delft-based practice mecanoo is nearing completion.
located on the dutch island of texel in oudeschild, north holland, the 1,200 square meter extension is
expected to open at the end of 2011. housing a new entrance hall and exhibition spaces, the design and
use of recycled material acts as a homage to the rich and extensive collection of the museum.
referencing the vernacular wooden structures that exist on the island, the museum features five interlinked
gable roofs and a glazed facade that is fully clad in wood slats. taken from pilings used in the north holland canal,
the contemporary and vertical application looks to strengthen the museum's overall identity. a porous surface
of alternating glass and wood create a curious and intriguing volume that draws both visitors and light inside.
