francois jaubert: barret 001 for barcelona

'barret 001' located in barcelona, spain

france based francois jaubert has proposed hotel 'barret 001', a solution for the architecturally diverse urban setting of the
plaza del angels, located in barcelona, spain. the existing spatial conditions produce concentrated heat islands during midday
due to the lack of shade bearing elements in the center of the square. a broad range of established gothic and contemporary
buildings calls for the introduction of a thoughtful design to reduce visual competition within the confined space.

the proposed solution is a cantilevered and elongated volume which hovers forty meters above the plaza providing shade and
maintaining existing sight lines across the urban center. the interior program's distribution allows a unified hotel block to encourage
interaction between guests while the restaurants, bars and shops are located on lower levels to allow an exchange between transient
visitors within the city. a fresh roof garden serves as a counter weight for the predominant form sensitively providing shade to a
neighboring structure during the hot afternoon sun.

too cold and futuristic for Barcelona. Barcelona it's more artsy and mediterranean, a city full of colors and mediterranean cousine. That concept would be better in a city like Paris or NY but not Barcelona... too digital for a bohemian city with ancient architects like Gaudi not talking about the tradition in architecture in Spain. In addition the hotel is hiding the protagonism of the MACBA and that would be backwards. Spain smells to home made cousine and that building smells to prefab food. Anyway it merits atention too see it anb be published but nothing more for Barcelona. Take care

To be honest, I think that this project highlights the protagonism of the public space in this part of the city, which is the very protagonist.

This square is a very social space, and the project helps it to be bigger.

Also I always found the MACBA as the very prefab and alien element in this quarter. Its scale is huge and is white is blinding.

El proyecto es muy interesante, pero no creo que pertenece a esa emblematica plaza, seria un desastre! Lo podrian hacer en otro sitio, por favor? En dubai p.e......saludos!

it's like a big pool jumping board with the form of number 7. a hotel like this should have views to something interesting not like the roofs of the surrounding buildings but above all it shouldn't be taller an with bigger protagonism than of the most important museums of the capital...

Great use of ethereal lighting effects to distort an otherwise mediocre project. Not everyone can do BIG.

ilikefalafelthoughi'mfromeurope: Barcelona is as techno-bourgeois as it gets. It's the centre for the industrial bourgeoisie of Spain since it was pretty much the only place in Spain to get a full Industrial Revolution. Of course artists from a bourgeois background are very common and of course this also means a working class Barcelona exists but I don't see where could one even begin to get the idea that Barcelona is a bohemian and colourful city, especially given the extremely cold, squaresville ideas that pass as dogma amongst the architectural establishment of the city (which is and will always be in hands of the bourgeoisie unless some sort of revolutionary change happens - anyway, check out the Vila Olímpica area, with Google Maps if you will, if you want to see what mainstream architects from Barcelona feel comfortable with and what's behind the spirit of the classes that have enough money to choose what gets built in this city - certainly not bohemian nor colourful unless you count red brick as "colour".)

Anyway, these renders are ludicrous.
