the kauffman center for the performing arts by moshe safdie and associates is nearing completion.
set to open on september 16, 2011 in kansas city, missouri, the structure represents a new approach to cultural life,
marking for the first time a project of this scale and program in the city. acting as a catalyst for social, educational
and economic vitality, the 285,000 square-foot center aims to advance the role of arts within the community while
encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration and cross fertilization of audiences.

as designboom previously reported, the facility will include two stand-alone halls - the 1,800-seat muriel kauffman theater
and the 1,600-seat helzberg hall - housed within arched glass and steel volumes enclosed by a glass facade that will provide
sweeping views of the city. once operational, the center will be one of the most technically and architecturally advanced
facilities of its kind in the nation.

It's unfortunate Safdie rarely comes up with something original. In this case, the inspiration might have come from HeatherwicksEast Beach Cafe

maybe more inspired by Richard Meier's church outside Rome.

How ugly and excessive architecture can be!
Fortunate that this is not unique.

Kansas City is more than likely the home of more mediocre buildings designed by (some what) famous architects than any other metropolitan area in the USA.
This behemouth is the current feather in the hat of those with money and no taste...

Just as an FYI - This project is actually quite a bit further along than these images depict. The Helzburg Hall (which is nicer inside than one might expect for a Sofdie designed building) was turned over to the owner earlier this month and is being utilized by the KC Orchestra for practice and tuning.

I don't beleive the Heatherwicks EAst Beach Cafe was the starting point for this project (as they would have been designed at the same time). Though I can't argue with your critique of Safdie's lack of design talent and originality!

My guess is something like this was more the starting point for insperation ~ http://citymama.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2008/11/09/eggslicer.jpeg

Surrounded by the usual rectangular structures, the curvature of this building has eye-appeal to me and hopefully has the same for the folks of Kansas City d;-)

i think it looks very similar, possibly a more aggressive version of the Glasgow SECC in Scotland http://www.secc.co.uk/

I think the design is rather unfortunate in a number of ways, however, this juvenile fascination with implying that it was inspired by various other designs is meaningless. This building was designed approx a decade ago and clearly has no relation to the projects mentioned.

you guys are all just a bunch of doubting Thomass' and green eyed monsters. Please send in some of your own projects so we may all equally criticise. Oh that's right none of you have designed anything worthy of any mention or of any significance....
