'HI MATIC hotel', matali crasset's latest collaboration with patrick elouarghi and philippe chapelet is now open.
designed to offer visitors a new hotel typology, the project looks to establish new methods of interaction and an
original experience for travelers.

distributed over five floors, the hotel houses 42 rooms of which there are numerous variations. combining the
aesthetics and ideologies of both an urban hotel and a country lodge, the rooms feature cabin-like modules which
can be adapted to suit the user and time of day. an integrated system of panels and storage is erected in the middle
of the room, re-appropriating the space and disconnecting itself from its surrounding environment.
the HI MATIC hotel is part futuristic hostel, part japanese riokan. eco-friendly elements are evident throughout,
with organic paint on the walls, REN bath products and organic food for breakfast.

personal and protective dwellings made from wood and brightly colored glass enclose the visitor and provide a
place of solitude. a platform bed in the middle of the unit remains low to the ground and acts as both modular seating
and a sleeping surface. simple and autonomous in their approach, the rooms - like to rest of the hotel - are free from
clutter and unnecessary kitsch. walls are void of paintings, and windows free of drapes, allowing the custom cabins
themselves to become the main focus.

don't want to spend a night in toy box!
erube   05.13.11
I like how the walls of the boxes act as privacy from the outside. There is so much light in the rooms!!
jess   05.13.11
Playful!
Hanny   05.13.11
Looks playful and nice for a couple of nights. Unfortunately, as I checked out the website, I couldn't figure out if it was adapted to a wheelchair in any way. Looking at the shower and the stairs, I suppose not.

Dear jess, of course there's so much light in the rooms. The room is a bit larger than the window!
I like the concept anyway.

I love this concept of a new kind of hostel and am surprised that with all our open source approaches to culture that this hasn't been capitalized on yet. Its perfect for tourists that are just jaunting from one place to the next across Europe and don't want to be hassled with concierges and check-in/check-out procedures. Its a great independent take on the hotel and encourages community interaction among travelers. Very cool concept!
