'AG+' by tokyo-based practice norisada maeda atelier is a multi-level private dwelling in
fujisawa kanagawa, japan. considering the client's request for maximum floor space,
the design features a floating loft level between the ground and first floor which is treated
sensitively with both materiality and light to result in a low-lying multi-purpose room.

street face

from the street, the small project is read simply and clearly as a white box with only a strip
of glazing wrapping around its core as its distinguishing trait. lacking any other form of windows
other than a low-running band by an outdoor reflective pool, the house remains completely private
on the ground floor as well as the upper level. strategic placement of internal glass elements ensure
that the whole interior is well illuminated.

outdoor water basin

standing over the centre of the main space, the loft space has a low ceiling height of 1.4m.
the surface of the ceiling is covered in aluminum, providing the illusion of extension by
a mirroring effect. the reflective nature of the aluminum also serves to reflect natural light
to the space below. the upper storey, accessed by a set of folded white stairs establishes
site lines to the rest of the dwelling by a long line of structural glass that runs along
one side of the floor.

Amazing, I love how the architect played with light and allowed the rays to focus on the perfect spot. Everything was done with careful consideration. I just wish the exterior was less simple and box looking.
