tokyo based practice apollo architects and associates has completed 'cadre' a single family home in uonuma, japan,
designed to respond to the heavy snowfall and earthquake prone region.

the broad rectangular volume has been extracted and manipulated, revealing a complex layering of form and program.
hovering above the ground, the second storey - and primary living area - is designed as both a functional and aesthetic
component, its stark, heavy form raised to accommodate the snow build up which can reach three meters.

a single room composes the second floor where separation of space is slight and transparent. a large enclosed courtyard
pierces through the heart of the structure, acting as a light well and connection to the often harsh outdoor environment.
abundant light floods the area - housing the kitchen, living room, dining room, bathroom and bedroom - despite the low
levels of annual sunshine. large south facing windows frame and highlight the surrounding neighborhood,
drawing elements of the encompassing context inwards, providing a constant and conscious connection to the outdoors.
