mpc arquitectos: intervention of the chapel of rest

spanish studio mpc arquitectos has completed an intervention of the ‘chapel of rest’ in san bartolome of lanzarote, spain. looking to resolve a series of functional deficiencies, the extension and renovation aims to provide the community with an integral and highly operational space.

front

expressed as a prismatic white box, the new form – projected to the west of the existing volume – contains a new entrance, distribution space and pergola-type corridor which opens onto the surrounding garden. a continuous lattice fence surrounds the structure, synthesizing the modern and vernacular buildings.

side

the small interior volume, measuring 9×9 meters, is a direct response of the slopped site. long, linear platforms consume

the floor space in its entirety, providing elevated surfaces for the worshippers to stand. fully glazed walls, interrupted only

by structural and stylistic pillars, merges the chapel with the encompassing environment, its internal components at one

with its surroundings.
