japanese architects archiplace (ishii masahiro, kondo tamiko) has sent us images of 'house in kagurazaka',
a multi-storey private dwelling in a residential neighbourhood of tokyo, japan. taking up a small footprint
due to the restricting size of the site as well as the local setback regulations, the design is a top-heavy
volume that features an asymmetrically-pitched roof line that extends the sense of space vertically.

pushed back from the street line, the design features a single parking space which remains
covered by the upper levels of the house. the higher volume reads as a floating structure clad
in clean, horizontally running panels of metal. a small outdoor terrace is generated by an
excised mass on the second floor.

the internal programs are organized as a series of voids in the space. the main communal area -
living, kitchen and dining - are placed on the first floor with differing ceiling height to achieve
appropriate levels of openness vs. intimacy. a generous skylight on the angled roof provides
abundant sunlight to the loft as well as the rest of the house below.
