german architectural studio amunt (björn martenson, sonja nagel, jan theissen) has sent us images
of 'cafe pavilion', a small, single-storey structure in the town cemetery of düren, germany.
recently having taken on the role of a public park, the design provides the cemetery with a new,
public shelter that visitors can utilize for funeral ceremonies, a meeting point, or a space for reflection.

featuring a multifacted ceiling landscape, the design inserts three closed volumes that accommodate
the service facilities of the pavilion. the interstitial space around these additions divide the floor plan
into three areas which are sculpted and defined by different, archetypical ceiling shapes: barrel vault,
pitched, and tented roof. the roof forms can be read on the facade as a solid volume floating above
the glazed faces.

providing expansive and diverse views into the surrounding park, the landscape is projected into
the interior and reflected back during the day to establish a direct dialogue between site and architecture.
the wall and ceiling surfaces are finished in light, pre-produced timber to lend the space a monolithic aesthetic.
the reinforced concrete floor slab is mixed with dolomite stone from the alps to result in a terrazzo-like
appearance.
