'500m living room' by austrian practice caramel architects (günter katherl, martin haller,
ulrich aspetsberger) is a multi-level dwelling for a family in wien, austria. placed on
a 500 m2 grassy plot, the design focuses on connecting the communal living space with
the outdoors, in essence, extending the interior out on to the meadow.

exterior view

featuring a floating bevelled volume, the ground level is wrapped in floor-to-ceiling glazing that
curves around the floor plan. the interior is projected out on to the garden and outdoor pool,
establishing a panoramic view of the surrounding land. a system of exterior curtains on tracks
allows the inhabitants to control privacy as well as natural sun intake. the top levels are
distinguished by a rhythmic treatment of vertical windows of different widths.

upper volume

conceived as a continuous spatial volume, the public programs - living, dining, kitchen - is defined
and grouped in ways that avoid full wall components: the living lounge is stepped down into
a scooped area while a suspended entertainment system and shelving unit stands sets
the dining space apart. the roof accommodates an outdoor terrace with the removed patch of
grass relocated on to its surface.

that's a very strange bit of topiary on the roof, plus green carpet, green tiles, green upholstery and even a green pool. so definitely 'green' then. and the fence ; altogether well weird. great movie set.

for jacques Tati (mon oncle) in a modern version...

on a first glance it looks quite nice, but then...
how does the space between glass façade and kitchen desk work (cleaning, waterproof sealing...)?
Why is there an internal and external curtain?
What happened with the strange pavillon attached on ground floor level? Why does it have a different height and doesn't "flow" and follow the main base?
Replacing the green on the roof? Sorry, but green on a roof has a different quality: not only mentioning, biosphere, water retention and colletcting (feeding ground water level...).

A building as green as putting an Barcelona Chair outdoors ,-)

odd detailing the way the kitchen cabinetry just jams up tight against the glass

I bet the client wanted all that green... de rest looks nice!

How does one keep the space between the cabinets and the glass clean (my clear plastic "sealed" 2005 Mac screen shows dust and dirt)? Why not a huge hedge along the fence . . . won't all the neighbor kids want to swim (or, do kids even exist?)???? The privacy issue? Keeping the place clean? Ostentation? And a floor lamp outside, let alone a WHITE Barcelona chair? And, keeping a heated pool heated without a cover? What kind of reality are we dealing with here?

A bit Clockwork Orange, what. Seems designed for a rural setting, where it could omit the curtains. In a residential area they'd be drawn all the time. And exterior curtains: hello mildew the bottom 30 centimeters, wind would shred them.

Need more pictures - second floor, roof garden etc.
Polycarbonate fence - not bad. Exterior siding???
Nice touch with the lamp at pool side.

Well i like it, this floating land-jellyfish!
some plans would have been useful in explaining what seems to be a clumsy connection to an existing structure. And yes the green carpet is a little passe, but can we please get over the mini-haters delight in pointing out detailing faux pas and enjoy its buoyant beauty.
