tokyo-based fuse-atelier (shigeru fuse) has completed 'house in abiko', a three-storey
private dwelling in abiko, chiba prefecture, japan. conceived for a couple who collects
furniture as a hobby, the design revolves around an open and brought living room that is
flexible for multiple configurations.

street face

situated on a tight site flanked by neighbouring structures, the monolithic form is constructed from
reinforced concrete and features a multitude of faceted corners. two volumes protrude out of
the street facade to create an overhang above the entrance and the car park. the larger cantilevered
arm is fronted with a single plane of glass which permits sunlight to enter the interior.

back of the plot

accommodated on the second storey, the main living space sits elevated over the street with
a double-height void above it. the language of the faceted exterior is continued to the interior,
manifesting as a dynamic multi-angled ceiling form. this heightened focal point extends
the sense of space vertically, resulting in a room that is exceptionally open and airy,
despite the heaviness of the material used. a punched-out sky light and another square-faced
window to the back of the plot coupled with the reflective white floor maximizes the amount of
natural daylight entering the house.

maybe they sold all their furniture to afford this new sculpture...
sculpture   07.28.11
it IS rather ironic that the program emphasizes that and yet none is shown

Pffieww..it looks rather cold. The exterior is very apealing, sadly the interior isn't... To much cold materials; but I must admit, its a matter of taste!

The guy of the video is desperately looking for someone inside! no dude, no life in mars...

To much for a house, for me it looks like a bunker!! I thought was a museum... and again... an ugly view outside.
Dario   07.28.11
beautiful

Interesting carving out of space but I feel a bit sorry for the people living across the street. it looks a bit like an alien asteroid has landed in their street. There is literally no engagement with the street and it sits completely out of context.... I would be worried about the mental stability of someone that lived here. It feels very isolated... in every sense of the word

I get vertigo just looking at those stairs without a railing...
nervous   07.29.11
this is soooo awsome, wish i could live in a house like this!!!
CJ   07.29.11
nice , well in mo the design is working, putting the space barier to be the second part of the house, i can imagine how the furniture become highlight in the house ( the house it self so monotonic and cold and the diffrent, the furniture become a warmth ), what i concern is, is it really work a house without active window? the neighboorhood use an active window... how the air gonna circulate?
noob zero   07.30.11
it's worthless because stairs has't a head room.
hard   07.30.11
why u done roof like this ?
what's adavantage of that ..
it's look ugly.
hard   07.30.11
Interesting exterior. The video tour doesn't show the area next to, or above, the front door. Lack of railings may help bring furniture in up/down stairs but look unsafe. The video tour to the third level one would think one would have to bend out of the way of the wall/ceiling. Like the glass wall. The overall impression is one of sterility that would be enhanced by paint to the interior surfaces. Would like to see the dwelling when the occupants are living in it d;-)

no safety regulations in japan i see!!
dont fall baby.
tt   07.31.11
Ironic! it looks like a huge stone but empty inside. out of context.
Stone   07.31.11
Geeeeez . . . it has all been said . . . and, more cleverly . . . so, for my two bits: it amazes me that the architects are consistent with their stair designs (see the movies). Also, am I missing something . . . doesn't cement crack eventually . . . and, not always where you want it to crack? I'm glad I'm not the "li'l woman who has to clean that white, white floor." Found the telephone wires an integral part of the house sculpture. Don't fall, baby . . . |: ) is exactly right!!!!

An exceptionally daring design!!

We should see this house again when it's furnished. Probably it will become a better living space.
betim   08.01.11
for furnishing, see my www.kagu.dk
otherwise seems likesuited for walking around, not for dwelling/living.
finnsloth.dk   08.01.11
the stairs are very dangerous
sotax   08.01.11
As the description states, the couple collects furniture as a 'a hobby'. Looks like the house is part of that hobby and not a structure for living. As stated many times, the stairs are homicidal and many of the spaces are not conducive, so far, to human life. I agree, I'd like to see it with their 'hobby' furnishings!

Sculpturally it is interesting but practicality it is not. You walk into a narrow space up a treacherous stairway which is not kid or elderly friendly. I would go insane living in this barren interior. Why would anyone invest in creating such a dwelling that is odd, uninviting, cold and frightening to live in?
