new york based practice we-designs.org and los angeles based XP& architecture collaborated to design
the '(RE)configured-assemblage' proposal, an infrastructural construct which links multiple districts of long beach, california.
fabricated from sections of locally sourced shipping containers, the interlocking arrangement generates open courtyards and
mediating spaces to foster communal relationships and interaction within the urban landscape. four stories of program will
provide art galleries, lofts, shops, cafes and an education center to revitalize the long beach boulevard and broadway area.

shifting containers

the shifting profile of the fragmented containers is conceptually derived from the nearby bustling port. voids generated by the dynamic
facade creates balconies which overlook the gathering nodes. a double skin of o-shaped perforations and louvers encompass the structure to reduce
solar gain and easily ventilate excessive heat while passively lighting the interior. the green roof in conjunction with recycled grey and
brown water collection efficiently hydrates the vegetation on site. benches, planters and street lighting extend the metal appearance into the immediate
surroundings guiding visitors towards the new development.
