barcelona-based practice nabito architects (alessandra faticanti, roberto ferlito) has sent us
images of 'i-opera', their design entry into the open international competition for
busan opera house in busan north port, south korea. aiming to serve as a landmark not only
on the international level but the local level, the design is approached as a multi-storey
public space with a number of functions including a pool, shopping area, exhibition space,
restaurant, and a children's playing zone.

view of outdoor public platform and pool

focusing on providing transparency and communication on a visual, structural, and
programmatic level, the proposal is conceived as a box from which three entities are hung:
the opera house and its facilities, the exhibition space, and a multifunctional block.
an outdoor platform acts as an open public plaza that blurs the boundaries between interior
and exterior, providing access to the rest of the complex through three emphatic escalators.
the entire building is wrapped in a translucent skin that maintains a direct dialogue between
the architecture and its surroundings as well as the facility itself.

view of pool

passing through the concave exhibition space, a circular ramp connects the lobby to
a public outdoor podium on the roof level. the top of the structure secures a 360 degree
panoramic view of the city and the ocean, and provides an outdoor venue for a variety of events.

in order to reduce CO2 emissions and to function in a sustainable fashion, the immediate site
will be planted with bamboo which absorbs 35% more CO2 than other plants. solar energy
will be harvested throughout the day and used to illuminate an LED media wall on the facade.

What a fantastic design. I imagine it will look stunning when completed sofas

a project like many others....already seen....

I`ve noticed a great complexity in every lay out published. Kind of pretencious...May be the constraints of the project breifing are asking for something really new. I guess.

Anyway, ther is no buiding that can fix the worst urbanistic operation seen in years. The plot and the arrangement of the surrounding areas are just terrible.

Perhaps some constructive criticism.. The 3d images are a bit over the top. Lens flares, jets, dogs, overlaid images adverts, transparent people, it all detracts from the the architectural forms. Only thing missing is the elusive birds. Tone down on all the flashy presentation techniques and allow the architecture to be seen. Just an observation.

Amazing!! A Nabito project is a Nabito project. You can recognize it in a million. As always a mix of style, joy, humanity and an unpredictable architecture. You guys rock.

It's a rectangular box with tubes sticking out and a hole in it. Sorry but there is not much architectural merit to that. Projecting images onto a canvas does not make it architecture..what has happened to true architectural intervensions worldwide.
Unfan   08.25.11
Although there are some interesting ideas here,i cant help but wonder if this is a collage of rex's projects, specifically, the wyly theatre and museum plaza projects. The collision of cultural and commercial (public pool infront of an opera house?)doesnt make any sense.
archi-fan   08.26.11
Too often competition projects are given to somebody in the office lacking on site and practical design experience. How would you possibly imagine integrating the pool with the entrance to the opera?

Who makes these terrible render???
