‘flinders house’ by australian practice sharif abraham architects is a private retreat for a couple and their child on a stretch of cliff-top land in victoria, australia. situated next to the flinders gold course, the design accentuates the site’s sense of isolation by focusing on how the surrounding landscape would be perceived from the interior.

continuing the characteristics of the golf course, the site features a series of mounds that one must traverse to enter the house. the living space secures projected views of the landscape, which continues around the other side of the house behind the kitchen. this linear arrangement of floor-to-ceiling glazing lends a transparent, airy nature to the interior.

harvesting a wide perspective of the gold course, the living space is contained within an elliptical volume which has been inserted into two perpendicular box forms. the curved shape of the room instills a sense of fluidity while providing a cost-effective floor space which is flexible for multiple furniture layouts. the wall surface is finished with hand-sourced veneer of one victorian eucalyptus tree which has been glued as a ‘final skin’ on site.
