delft-based practice mecanoo architects have designed the 'die toneelschuur in haarlem', a discreetly positioned theater
in the heart of haarlem, netherlands. wedged between existing structures along a narrow and winding street, the elevated
contemporary facade cantilevers to welcome visitors into a sheltered gathering space in front of the influential venue.
upon entering, a double story atrium evoking the character of a street is enclosed with both glass wall and ceiling to produce
an airy interior space contrasting the dense urban context.

the central area dissolves into a series of wings and corridors leading to the programmatic spaces. containing two theaters
and two auditoriums, the diverse seating configurations and stage dimensions support a variety of productions and performances.
a material palette of exposed brick and grey tile turn into warm wood floors and concrete partitions evoking the transition
from the cityscape into the intimate rooms.

good design, well executed

like the way it's inserted into the surrounding urban context - skillful and sensitive without pandering

I disagree totally. That cantilevered mass is not the least bit "sensitive" to the historic surroundings. It's a blaring bulge, a bumptious burp of post-modern bombast. What's the point? The interior, by contrast, seems serviceable and workmanlike. Why not signal that in the exterior?

Cold, claustrophobic and invasive all at the same time. However, the model is cool.

Next to the Z Hadid project in todays DB selection, this comes accross a little tame don't you think?

Hmm, I don't understand why architecture should always be sensitive to its surroundings. This is now, not 300 years ago. If future esthetics consider it unapropriate, it's up to them to tear the building down anyway. Why bother? Although I neither like or love it..
