japanese architectural practice katsutoshi sasaki have recently completed 'oshikamo house', a single family residence amidst
the residential neighborhood of toyota, aichi, japan. the footprint of the structure creates a series of open wings on either half
of the dwelling generating a unified interior to foster continuous interaction between the family members. vertically striated
white metal panels clad the changing volume shape, shifting from rectilinear outer corners to a concave niche, discreetly presenting
the main entrance in the front elevation and a tree in the rear of the home.

the unique spatial arrangement places the kitchen in the center introducing dynamic activity into the heart of the home
while the private areas of bedrooms and study rooms gradually transition into bisected corridors creating minimal opportunities
for extended isolation. the programmatic distribution compels inhabitants to cross through the communal area and then branch
into the gently curved passages with stairs and ladders to raised spaces to block direct views.

Looks like a giant chromosome building! I love the roof! The movement in it is really nice.

vey nice distribution idea!
why do all those nice japanese houses have a horrible air conditioned machine in the wall of the living room?
josean   10.28.11
Interesting, one supposes, but what a jarring intrusion of an industrial aesthetic into a domestic neighborhood and how brazen and pushy to cram it right up next to an elegant traditional house.
Tom P   10.28.11
Tom P, did you notice the house to the east? There's a variety of housing in this neighborhood and unfair fault this one for being elegant in a minimal way. I confess I love the exterior but am not a fan of the interior. And I don't understand why the interior court uses rectilinear geometry.
jxd   10.28.11
This screams arrogant isolation. The neighborhood bully has arrived.
nelliej   10.28.11
the 'elegant traditional house' could be less than 10 years old and the one I stayed in had the exact same finishes inside as the new intrusion
