ome is a rural town located outside of tokyo, japan, where japanese firm ikeda yukie architects has recently completed
'sunbrella house'. the structure is situated on a slopping hill with views of mountains to the south and a preserved forest to the north and east.
taking into consideration the surrounding landscape the form has no sharp edges and all corners have been rounded to mimic the topography.
the open space concept allows for radial circulation and uninterrupted views of the neighborhood and bordering countryside.
the roof and projecting eave respond to the seasonal climate providing protection from sudden storms and the severe summer sun.
the extended contours of the ceiling rafters are exposed to resemble the spokes of an umbrella providing the interior with a structural
detail of the form. to reduce air volume and surface area of the exterior facade, the upper level links into the lower portion
minimizing energy need for heating. water from the on-site well is used like a sponge underneath the terrace to cool the roof in the summer.
