international design firm west 8 has collaborated with trama arquitectos and estudio 3.14 to design
an urban renewal project for vallarta, mexico's iconic waterfront, malecon. conceived as a part of
the town's progressive and large-scale visionary strategic plan, the project seeks to reintroduce
the public realm to a human scale.
running along the water with sweeping views of the pacific ocean, the outdoor design features
a mosaic paving that carves out an undulating line on the sand. the historical identity of the village
is maintained and illustrated through mythic drawings by jalisco-born artist fiencio benitez.
the graphics are laid out using tarditional local pebble-stone pavement techniques, lending a contrasting
skin along the waterfront. catering to both the locals and tourists, the project also includes
specially-designed chairs and benches, newly-planted trees, and a cycling path.
