andrea kubna + ondrej lipensky: floating bath on vltava river

'floating bath on vltava river' in prague is conceived as a closed rounded space, floating on the water surface designed
by czech republic-based andrea kubná + ondrej lipensky. independent of the river banks, the circular structure is
accessible by boat. nearby the small harbors of strelecky and slavansky island, this facility becomes a location of repose
from the bustling activity of urban life. a perimeter ring of leasable cabins protect an interior central pool which permits
direct contact with the water. filtered with a textile membrane, dirt particles and bacteria are repelled ensuring a clean
bathing environment.

with a surface area of 900 square meters and depth of 165 centimeters, the volume may hold 300 individuals at one time.
four lanes with a length of 25 meters cut across the center. a sauna, steam room, bar, restrooms, showers and changing rooms
accommodate the bathers. during winter, a prefabricated wooden covering will allow a frozen surface suitable for ice skating,
reinstating a former tradition of skating upon the river's frozen surface during -26 degree celsius temperatures.

pretty cool

Cool idea, I would love to go to a place like this

@sthlm...If by 'copy' you mean a circular building on water, then yes it is a copy but this building serves a totally different purpose and shouldn't be downgraded because you've "seen it before"
Matt   11.28.11
Interesting idea but there are several BUT. Aside of legal permissions, a massive anchor and armatures would be needed for this river construction. The disassembly time and costs would be a question (i) every spring when snow and ice melts up the stream and (ii) before flood dangers (june 1997, august 2002). There is no other escape from that part of river than through narrow canal locks.

@Matt
"but this building serves a totally different purpose"
No, it's the same purpose except the Stockholm version is bigger and also includes a small hotel/café. The main purpose is public recreation and swimming.

"a long tradition in many european and american cities, this floating structure with recreational bathing facilities" -- A long tradition? Not to my knowledge.

In any case, a river's currents are problematic, but this idea would work beautifully in lakes.
