the proposal created by danish firm BIG architects is one of three shortlisted submissions for
the st. petersburg pier international design competition. the masterplan will organize and harmonize
a variety of individual events along a network of paths, merging to form the iconic pier structure
which will gradually flow into the waters of tampa bay. the branching pattern will collectively form
the 'tributary park' containing native plantings of diverse color schemes. the gardens will highlight
the programmatic sectors of the park including the museum, observation deck, playgrounds and natural
forested areas.

bustling activity will be channeled towards the 'wave walk' which undulates to dip and rise from the water,
framing a swimming pool and small holding area for kayaks, canoes and small scale boats. similar to the waves
of the ocean, the increasing momentum generated by the volumes of people circulating onto the pier culminates
by looping the promenade overhead, sheltering people underneath and providing elevated views from the
generated roof terrace.

the plaza below the arch may be used for outdoor markets and as a band shell pavilion for concerts. the public spaces
terminate with a platform which submerges into the bay creating an additional view towards the city. exhibition spaces,
banquet halls and other public spaces will by placed inside the sculptural building.

Nice project but for me it looks defenetly too fat. A bigger and smaller loop with more elegant proportions would look better I think. now its too much the buggy-rubber-tire one. The inside has absolutely nothing to do with the outside, they just putted horizontal floors inside...what a pity, how nice could it be to organize an interesting walktrough...

so silly...

Looks like a giant version of the skateboard look ramp...now you need a giant skater

its been over 5 years since their people building and theyre still doing same stuff. its a really efficient enterprise. Way to go Bjarke!
technologic   12.01.11
It really is a proposal way too large, although the design pleases me very much. The form is simple and almost instinctive, but its scale and grandeur reflects the importance of what is intended.
In this bias, the "fat" makes perfect sense.
@gxrgxr   12.01.11
Another BIG time project!
JR   12.01.11
Great, appropriate and exciting! Good to know that there are people out there who do not need the computer as a source of inspiration, but as a tool to display and construct their genuine man-made ideas.
tico   12.01.11
they cant find solutions for small scales where there's no much space.think more.at least there are no diagrams with arrows...
wherearewegoing   12.01.11
BIG! this is so, so, so dumb. lets concentrate on the loop-d-loop and ignore the rest of the site then?
reallllllllllly   12.01.11
By the way: they have studied their Boullée, haven't they?
tico   12.01.11
BIG: form fabricates function.

My only problem with the project is that it is the exact same thing the have done in two different projects, the latest of them being loop city, where you find the exact same shape.

Haters are bitter. They can't do better than that.

People will always be jealous of talented people, and Bjarke Ingels is one of the most talented practicing architects today. He creates awesome spaces, what a great addition this would be to any city with a waterfront! I hope it gets built

Bjark is so cool, I love him as much he loves himself ! <3
cubert   12.02.11
I believe Mattel designed this about 20 years ago. It was called a Hot Wheels Track...
Thomas   12.02.11
This project is trash!
And that is the truth.
BIG has made some nice projects but this is surely not one of them...
noooooooooooo   12.03.11
wonderful! another giant, artificial monument to excess. architecture is important because it exists in time. this has neither staying power, nor is it even appropriate to the present time. the form is excessive in my opinion.

thumbs down :(

I lived north of St Pete a few years ago and I remember a hurricane was supposed to go right up Tampa Bay. It didn't and landed further south. I just wonder whether this design or any other will stand up to the wind/water forces of a hurricane landing in that region. d;-)
Jetwax   12.05.11
Nice concept,
Being Florida, it will be shown but never built.
lornec   12.05.11
so simplistic form from BIG, as they already used us with

The Pier we HAVE offers more to the public and tourist.
I say repair what we have. Let the people vote for what they want.
carol gray   12.05.11
Let the people vote on what the want. I say keep the PIER we have.
mary   12.05.11
beautiful renderings...
a.brach.   12.07.11
highly impractical. something that big and unsupported will be ripped away by the first hurricane, wasting all that money. a very poor design with absolutely no consideration for the area that it will be placed.
moose   12.07.11
I honestly thought it was real...
Good work.
Dan   12.08.11
Wow! Go for it! Super impressive, practical, inspiring, imaginative. I'd make the trip from Jacksonville just to experience it (and that's saying a lot for me)!
