japanese practice takehiko nez architects has shared with us images of 'urban hut', a multi-level
private dwelling in a downtown block of tokyo. conceived as a 'rough and tough' house that will
grow beyond the completion of the construction, the compact design features incomplete finishes
and a variety of scale to the spaces to offer unexpected discoveries for the young clients as they
live in and personalize their home.

street view
situated on a 30 m2 site, the small residence maximizes on available floor space by stacking
the open programs on top of the other. each storey serves as one room with no interior partitions
to define separate zones. the sense of space is further expanded by securing ample amount of
natural light which soaks through a roof light over the central staircase. clad in translucent glass panels,
the circulation core becomes a light well that penetrates through to the ground floor.

front elevation
exploring spatial scales as well as voids and gaps, the design introduces a dynamic collection of
space that ranges from private to open. on the top floor, the single room is defined as two components
by a platform-like stage that serves as a mini-loft. walls and ceilings are intentionally left exposed to
take on a minimalistic 'skin and bone' aesthetic, much like the makeup of a traditional hut.
this construction method also serves a functional purpose, letting in sunlight through the rhythmic gaps
between studs.
