rotterdam-based practice MVRDV has unveiled 'bastide niel', a masterplan for an extension to the city of bordeaux, france.
covering 35 hectares along the right bank of the garonne river, the dense development will add 375,000 square meters of
program including homes, offices and urban amenities. a contemporary intervention, the district will respect the nearby
historical center of bordeaux while becoming the largest net-zero neighborhood in the world. the atmosphere maintains
history and individualism within a densely configured and human-scale district.

market
the program is comprised of 3200 residences, 25,000 square meters of retail, 15,000 m2 crafts, 58,000 m2 of public facilities
including a university building, municipal archives, cultural building, community center, schools, day care and sports facilities.
following existing rail lines and structures, the plan integrates natural light and vegetation to create a vibrant and lively area.
a network of mostly one way streets approximately 6 to 10 meter wide will accommodate cars, public transportation, bicycles and
pedestrians on the same level while trams will be isolated into a special lane to increase traffic safety. a mixture of roads, lanes
and alleys will produce 144 blocks bordered with small parks, gardens and squares in addition to 'parc aux angéliques', a riverfront park
by french landscape designer michel desvignes.

By the way, where is all the green? I see more building density than green.
I don't understand your comment. First, net zero is a goal, and pursuing it will only help lower buildings energy use. The term 'net zero' may be new, but the idea of zero total energy consumption has been around a long time.
Technically, there have been many net zero projects finished around the world to date. Any quick Google search will turn up many examples. As the term is primarily used in the US, most projects defined as 'net zero' have been finished there, but as I said earlier the same principals have been around a long time around the world.
As for your last statement about green building...I wonder if you understand that "green" doesn't necessarily only mean "plants". In fact higher building density is one of the single most efficient was to make the built environment more green, as in more environmentally sustainable.
There was a great graphic study done a while ago that showed how much area the US population would occupy if they all lived at the density of existing major cities. If the entire US population lived at the density of NYC they wouldn't even fill Texas. The rest of the entire continental US would be unspoiled land...is that enough plant life for you?
