new york-based firm diller scofidio + renfro in collaboration with scottish practice keppie design and philadelphia-based
landscape architecture practice olin studio have produced the winning competition proposal 'granite web', a city garden for the
heart of aberdeen, united kingdom. a fusion of nature and culture, the cultural center is integrated into a three dimensional network of
connections evoking the form of an elastic web. extending into the encompassing urban context, the pathways are derived from
relevant site lines to support park and cultural activities while merging the existing and contemporary layers of the city. placed upon
a historic river site, the permeable parkland will reveal the multi-tiered archeology while connecting the city's future as a
technological hub for art, leisure and commerce.

arching tendons become pedestrian bridges, connecting union terrace across denburn road and belmont street while leaving
space below for exhibitions, events and performance areas. to the sculpted green space creates microclimates for quiet contemplation
to meadows for large gatherings. voids between plant groupings and paths bring unexpected swaths of natural daylight to the street
and interior rooms below. three landscape elements include 'the brae' hillock with a planted overlook, 'the butterfly' public entrance
and 'the forum' bandshell and lawn for performances.

this could look either beautiful or a concrete nightmare depending on the detailing and finishing
curioustoseeitbuilt   01.16.12
quite nice, although there is currently a lot of controversy about any proposal from locals. However the site is being used for drugs and the sort so anything will do to kick this social problem out the door. However I feel that if continuous funding isn't pumped in, it'll just degrade and become a drugs bed again.

And why do they render it so brightly when the site is actually very grim? Misleading architecture practices selling a dream

i totally quote curioustoseeitbuilt

Literally deppicting the shape of a rubber band ,, as cast on site concrete,, using formwork and humongus dimensions .. is not a design concept ,, is just constructing a narrative after the fact ..

in a world where 60 percent of citizens in developed countries are under the poverty line ? you gotta be kidding me ..

What will happen to the Arches in the Gardens? One of them is said to contain the remains of the Bow Brig\' which formed the old entrance to Aberdeen. This MUST be preserved. Do you intend to obscure the present view of Union Bridge? This is the world\'s largest granite built single span bridge. The southern side has already been obscured. The northern side MUST be left visible. Have you obtained permission from Network Rail to cover up the Aberdeen to Inverness railway? I hope that the citizens of Aberdeen vote against this proposal by an overwhelming majority.

I found a little bit dramatic gesture for a city like Aberdeen, looks out of scale compare to the environment and the neighborough.
By the way interesting approach even if not so playful and innovative...Voronoi cells...the garden...
Im agree with Dimi (1th comment) plenty on the web,
And almost 3 years later...

An addition to my comment of yesterday - All that concrete will convert UTG into a skateboarders' paradise.
