at the base of the wanaka valley, the 'hawkesbury residence' by los angeles-based marmol radziner overlooks the
rolling farmland of mt barker, new zealand. oriented with an elongated elevation towards the north, the dwelling is protected
by a deep roof eave to block the strong sun of the southern hemisphere while framing the distant alpine peaks. approaching the homestead,
the structure is encompassed by and recedes into the barren hillside beyond. the linear configuration and shallow footprint allows
sweeping mountain views from all of the interior rooms which are framed by the roofline and cedar deck.

an entry path parallels a stone retaining wall which contains integrated benches and outdoor fireplace. the common and
private areas are placed within separate volumes and have been connected with a stair. bordered with a continuous sliding
glass perimeter, the great room including the kitchen and living room may be opened to unify the indoor and outdoor dining area.
a wood wall encloses the study, bathrooms and ladder to a bedroom loft. the master and children's sleeping areas are set aside
within a private wing with unobstructed views of the landscape.

I love the use of wood detail throughout, simple lines, truly refined craftsmanship. Also captured some amazing views (we appreciate, as we also have some amazing views here in the high desert of New Mexico). www.tierraconceptssantafe.com

Everyone builds like this in Wanaka, come & see for yourselves - stained weatherboards with copper caps and local schist stone. If the site wasn't so great (would have cost millions of $$$) I'd say" Architectural Yaaaawn".
