indonesian practice budi pradono architects have recently completed 'issi villa', a dwelling which interprets the traditional
balinese residence with a modern twist in seminyak, bali. dividing the site into 9 areas, the 'sanga mandala' concept references
the typical pavilions wrapping around an outdoor courtyard. replacing the typical main design element, a swimming pool
forms a central datum on the site, manipulating the relationship between interior and exterior program. the front entrance
contains the kitchen, strategically placing the fire element of the brahma god to ward off evil spirits before they enter the home.

paralleling the cultural appreciation for ceremonial events, an internal procession eventually leads to the dynamic upper floor bridge,
becoming a secondary courtyard space. locally-sourced materials inclusing volcanic stone, andasit stone and sandstone unify
the complex. recycled iron wood is found on the decks and terrace as well as reused teakwood for floor finishes. a white perforated
metal sheet depicting a tree pattern wraps the first floor, adding a screen for privacy and enclosure capable of producing unique
interplay of light and shadow throughout the course of the day.
