contained within a 40 year old traditional japanese structure in arashiyama of kyoto, japan, 'jidaiya arashiyama' is a
historical costume makeover studio by kyoto-based practice geneto. positioned within a patchwork quilt context,
the expression of the renovated and periodically updated exterior was maintained, contributing to the established identity
of the town. the interior has been influenced by the simple joining of two dimensional pieces of fabric to form the iconic kimono,
and becomes individual with its unique pattern. this concept was interpreted to join space and material similar to
the gown's cloth.
the ground level contains a fitting and makeup room which may be separated from the photography studio by drawing
a simple white curtain with a delicate pattern of incised circles. a wooden installation comprised of fragmented angles
and windows serves as a boundary between the makeup application space and studio while doubling as storage and
display area for wigs. views to the street encourage a connection with the existing and unchanging neighborhood while
the interior experience is constantly altered by its dynamic daily activity.
