japanese firm junya ishigami + associates and dutch practice MAKS have produced the winning competition proposal
for a set of architectural interventions - a visitor's center, green houses for botanical gardens, floating performance stages
and the renovation of a historical mansion - for park groot vijversburg in tytsjerk, netherlands.
the existing historical villa currently hosts art exhibitions, musical performances and church services.
the new visitor center will blend into the 19th century grounds, rich with flora and fauna native to the northern region of holland,
with its positioning having minimal impact on its surroundings. its main hall stretches outwards, becoming a path which
naturally flows into a park trail, making the transition from interior space - as one progresses through the space,
leaving only its wall until it flows entirely - to the park environment.
three thin transparent walls will encircle the historical structure, renaissance garden, ancient pond and lines of lime trees.
these reflective surfaces will mirror the landscape, thus the building becomes the park. gently sloping ramps bring visitors
inside the center, softening the transition between the exterior and interior environment and merging with the landscape.
parallel to the aforementioned projects will be a 15 hectare extension to the park designed by rotterdam-based LOLA landscape architects,
utrect-based firm deltavormgroep and dutch landscape architect piet oudolf.

the project is planned for completion in 2014.
