last week the american institute of architects‘ announced the italian architect renzo piano as the winner of its 2008 gold medal. the award honors a significant body of work that has had a lasting influence on architecture.

piano’s accomplishments range from the menil collection in houston to the art institute of chicago’s modern wing, now under construction, to the recently completed new york times headquarters in new york. the washington DC -based institute praised piano’s structures as ‘sculptural, beautiful, technically accomplished and sustainable.’ previous winners of the medal include frank lloyd wright, IM pei, and santiago calatrava. read more here and here
