a winning design has been chosen from studio a+i for the new york city ‘AIDS memorial’ at st. vincent’s hospital park, a triangular plot with a dense grove of trees. the project is an inviting open space where people can contemplate and mourn at a circular reflecting pool. an assembly of steel tube structures is defined by the shape of the site, creating triangular planes which fold down to anchor to the ground at three specific points. trough beams provide lateral support while housing the planters that will feed the green screen covering the entire surface area of the construct. small painted tubes line the interior adding a third layer of support and narratives are engraved into circular pavers on the floor to share and learn about the epidemic.
