nestled into a north-facing cliff in mosman, australia, the ‘boustred house’ by australian practice ian moore architects overlooks sydney’s middle harbour towards the spit bridge and clontarf. the front door is accessed from the street by a pedestrian bridge leading into the second floor. inside, inhabitants find themselves at the top of a stairway which descends the site to link each of the three storeys. the length is illuminated with a strip of glass skylights, serving to also divide the home into two massings. a series of northern volumes contain the living areas and bedrooms while the bathrooms, study and service areas are pushed along the southern boundary into a smaller, enclosed block.

orienting views towards the backyard pool and northern panoramic vista, the rear facade expresses these volumes with stacked cantilevered roofs while a line of vertical fins support them along the western elevation, spanning the height of the ground level terrace and first floor balcony. the cement exterior is complimented with light bronze aluminum windows, sliding doors and external sun control louvers. a crisp palette of oak framed doorways and travertine floors unify the interior.

the residence is shortlisted in the villa category for the 2012 world architecture festival.
