shellhouse

shellhouse

carolina pino had been thinking about ideas related to mobile housing before coming to new york and seeing
and observing the division of classes, especially the city's homeless population. while attending the interactive
telecommunication program at NYU she developed her thoughts into a project which aimed to provide visibility
to this population. she designed 'shellhouse' to provide a portable living structure made from easily sourced
cardboard. each unit is also equipped with a radio frequency device which transmits the name, age and place
of origin of the person using the shelter. the device allows organizations to monitor and track the homeless,
helping them gain valuable data which helps people escape homelessness. the project will be on show at
milan's triennale from may to september.

I doubt many of the homeless will appreciate these free cardboard boxes, much less their inlaid tracking devices. Besides, does the designer actually believe that each person will fiercely defend his own cardboard box against theft, in order to keep the database straight?

I'm far from being convinced by that kind of project. This carboard box looks fragile and the life time of this product would be very short. It will be probably abandoned by the homelesss on the next night in the street.

Total useless!! I want a REAL home, not a f***** box to live inside!
