low-income housing by kanner architects

california's kanner architects completed the 26th and santa monica low-income family housing project last year.
the building expands the horizon of low-income housing, breaking the mould of so many projects gone wrong.
with a budget of million USD, the building holds an impressive 42,000 sq ft of residential space that is split into
44 low to moderate income housing units. the design incorporated the style of southern california modernist
architecture while keeping the mild climate in mind and achieving a human scale. the site features a community
room, shared courtyard space and underground parking to encourage resident interaction. the building also
uses a natural cooling system, avoid air conditioning all together, something nearly unheard of in the region.

the project recently won the AIA national honor award, the AIA national housing award and the residential
architect design award grand prize for affordable housing.

WOW, so let me get this straight, low income families get to live in a super nice stylish building while a guy like me who makes 6 figures has to pay outrageous rent on a crappy old building. That sounds fair. The building looks beautiful though, I guess I should make less money.

No, Brian, if you're making "six figures" you shouldn't have any trouble owning your own home in any city in the world (unless you're unreasonably in debt or have outrageous spending habits).

The most I've ever made is ,000 a year (and I"ve made considerably less than that for most of my 20 earning years) and I'm still able to rent liveable (though ugly as hell) apartments - of course, I have no health care, no car, etc.

I've looked at "affordable" or "low income" housing in cities all over the midwest and west coast and I can assure you that the above example is the exception - I certainly wish it were the norm. And I 'd love to find out what their idea of "low income" actually is.

That should say:

"The most I've ever made is 14 grand a year..."

I don't this kind of high quality building for low-incomers will ever happen in Malaysia. Impressive! Incredible!
