open architecture network announces winners of 2007 amd open architecture challenge

overall & africa challenge site winner by the global studio
the open architecture network was created by architecture for humanity, a non-profit organization co-founded by
cameron sinclair. the network is an online community ‘dedicated to improving living conditions through innovative
and sustainable design’. to further this goal they held a global design competition aimed at developing technology
facilities for communities in need: the 2007 amd open architecture challenge: digital inclusion. the winners of this
competition were announced yesterday in south africa. after receiving 566 entries from 57 countries, 1 overall
winner and two regional winners were chosen by an experienced jury.
the overall winner and africa challenge site winner honour was given to seattle based, the global studio for their
design of a technology media lab and recording studio for SIDAREC in nairobi, kenya. this project will now begin
construction thanks to financing from AMD and their 50x15 initiative with help from architecture for humanity
and SIDAREC.
the south american challenge site winners were igor taskov of nis, serbia and heather worrell and chunsheh teo
of indianapolis, USA, for their design of a fair trade chocolate factory and technology hub for kallari association in
ecuador. the top prize in the asian challenge site was given to max fordham llp & nick lawrence of london, UK,
for an innovative telemedicine center for nyaya health in the remote mountains of western nepal. these teams will
both be given 5,000 USD travel stipends to travel to their sites to work with the local community and develop their
projects further. architecture for humanity is currently seeking additional funds to construct these solutions for in
ecuador and nepal.
