'the chicago spire' by santiago calatrava


the chicago spire

architect santiago calatrava is currently working on the chicago spire, a massive 600m skyscraper that will
dominate the chicago skyline when it is complete in 2011. the building will have 150 floors featuring around 1,000
residences and will be the second tallest building in the world. unlike other tall buildings which are multi-functional
the chicago spire will be an all residential building. the twisting design was inspired by nature, as most of
calatrava’s work is. particular influence was drawn from spiralling snail shells. each floor is rotated 2.44 degrees
from the one below, totallaing 360 degrees. sustainably speaking the building is planned to receive a gold LEED
rating. the residences in a building of this monumental stature are definetly not cheap, prices range from 750,000
to 40 million USD.

Calatrava always seems to inpire me by bring out the articulate forms in an abstract composition from significant 'meaning' behind architecture. This is architecture to me.

yeah this could be architecture... for a magazine like this it really works... then we could ask Santiago Calatrava about the massive floods of the science fair that he made in valencia a few years ago, or about his little bridge in venize, which has to be under supervision 24h a day cause its strange movements... that's also important in architecture
