san francisco's house of falling furniture
san francisco's house of falling furniture

since 1997, the building sitting at the corner of 6th st. and howard st. in san fransiscio,
california has been a sculptural mural. the piece consists of tables, chairs, lamps and
even a grandfather clock, all hanging precariously out of the building’s windows. known as
‘defenestration’ (a word meaning to throw out of a window) the sculpture’s various pieces
are all fastened to the abandoned building to create the illusion of falling. The pieces was
conceived of by local artist brian goggin.

Great corner to buy dope.

Not sure they're defenestrated so much as escaping. That grandfather clock is definitely scoping out the street scene.

hmmm... I def appreciate art. but it looks like a dump.. why not use the building for living purposes... People are always looking for a place to live.. this is def a fixer upper. ;P

Lmao, I rolled by this place a while back and was wondering what was up with it. I never would have guessed it was falling furniture, I figured some guy was just messed up and made a loopy decision to nail his stuff to the outside of the house. Hah!
RoryDrake 07.09.08
Wow furniture stuck to a house, very interesting. I pity the poor fucker who came up with this, he obviously doesn't have any purpose.
tomo 07.09.08
It looks more like it is escaping furniture on the run! Very cool.
DCL 07.09.08
Photoshopped!
shopkeeper 07.11.08
no, it isn't photoshopped, I've seen it several times.
I somehow knew it was art, what else could it be?

By the range of comments it must be art. I am not sure if it qualifies as a masterpiece, but it does represent a significant enterprise. It seems to be reminiscent or derivative of some music video from the 90s.
Smartypants 07.14.08
why can't someone live in it with at least the few things that don't take up space indoors kept intact?
Willy 07.14.08
Can someone tell me if this building is still standing? I was there 11 years ago and saw it; it's a fabulous example of "only in California" art. I'm heading out there again this week and would like to see it once again if still there. Thanks!
Lulabelle 07.14.08
It's not photshopped, and yes its still there.
Nic 07.14.08
Wouldn't it be awesome to live in this thing? Like, to have real furniture inside and then have the fake furniture crawling out the window? Talk about creepy cool! Thanks for posting...
Koco 07.14.08
looks like he spent a long time customizing or maybe even creating each piece of furniture. there is much more work here than simply hanging furniture out of a window. looks fun, wish i could see it in person
bloo22 07.14.08
awesome. what about when it rains?
emily 07.15.08
So weird
piper 07.15.08
The piece of art is called "defenestration". I remember reading it on the building years ago and having to look it up. It is the best word I've ever learned.
defenestration: the act of throwing a thing or esp. a person out of a window

I remember when I first saw this building, 5 years ago when I first moved to the City. It's such a happy building. It looks like the furniture is playing tag along the walls. Tomo writes that there isn't any purpose, but there is! It's silly and fun and a slice of imagination in a part of town that can get pretty dim and dark.
Alex 07.17.08
i'll bet people walk other side of street here. any married gay people live there ?
jeff 7-20-08 07.20.08
very cool concept
romy 07.20.08
This fucktard has a lot of spare time. Seems he does not need to work for his cash.
PlookYou 07.21.08
Very creative!
Suchet. 07.21.08
That is the most interesting "form of art" I have seen.
For those of you who think it is a waste of time and space, where is your imagination...go with it...have fun!

I love this!! I wish I had the guts to do something like this.
sarah 08.04.08
I've driven past that before! And we tried to take pictures, but we were in a car, so they didn't turn out very well.
chibi 08.06.08
love it, and yeah it does bring a bit of fun and humor and art to a grim and grey world...should do this in other cities too...
