il girasole is located in marcellise, italy and designed between 1929-1935 by angelo invernizzi
with help from ettore fagiuoli. the building is named after the sunflower and also mimics the
plant’s sun tracking ability. the house is built on a large circular track and slowly moves
throughout the day to achieve the optimal sun exposure. although the entire building weighs
500 tons, only two motors running at a total speed of 3 horse power is required to move it.
it takes just over 9 hours to make one rotation at a top speed of 4mm per second.
