environmental design firm timelinks have released plans for a new carbon neutral city of the future in dubai known as ‘ziggurat’. inspired by the ancient ziggurats the futuristic pyramid structure spans over an area of 2.3sq km and will be able to sustain a community of up to 1 million. complexes within the city will take up less than 10 % of the original land surface, also providing an area for agriculture. the city will be entirely self sufficient as power will be supplied through steam, wind turbines and natural energy resources. transport will operate horizontally and vertically through a 360 degree network eliminating the need for cars. according to the international institute of the urban environment the ‘ ziggurat’ project is a viable one from a technical point of view. the project will be unveiled at cityscape dubai held at dubai international exhibition centre from 6-9 october, 2008.
