caroli shopping centre by schmidt hammer lassen architects

schmidt hammer lassen architects have won another architectural competition in the øresund region of sweden.
this time they've won a project which involves re-interpreting the caroli shopping centre in the heart of
malmö, sweden. a traditional shopping mall which is enclosed, caroli in a sense is disconnected from the city.
for their proposal, schmidt hammer lassen architects aimed to turn the centre inside out so that the city was
invited inside of the space. the project is based on recreating the qualities of the original carolus neighbourhood
before the centre was built looking at small squares, narrow streets, corridors and surprising urban spaces to
evoke the feeling of a more intimate urban space. small shifts and and displacements in the façade break down
the scale at eye level, creating small niches for impulsive gatherings while at the same time, the addition of
hallways, new entrances and exits will enhance the feeling of openness and welcome passers-by inside.
architecturally, the new caroli will feature bright, inviting spaces with simple, functional solutions and a
pronounced use of daylight to create a bright, pleasant indoor climate while reducing energy consumption.
the caroli rebuilding project is expected to commence in 2009.
