venice architectural biennale 08: sverre fehn retrospective at the nordic countries pavillion
architect sverre fehn : intuition – reflection – construction.
50 years ago the norwegian architect sverre fehn received international acclaim for
norway’s pavilion at the brussels world fair. in 1962 he designed the nordic pavilion in
venice. at that time he was in the avant-garde of reconciling building with nature
(the nordic countries pavilion has trees growing through the roof).
the pavilion is now the venue for a timely retrospective of his career.
sverre fehn’s most recent work, the norwegian national museum of architecture,
opened in oslo in march 2008. the museum took over sverre fehn’s archives (now 84 years old),
and presents 25 projects, 2/3 of them have been built while the rest have remained on
the drawing board. fehn himself has selected the projects included in the exhibition and
in the catalogue. a version of this exhibition, after completing its run in venice, subsequently
travels to the architecture museums in stockholm and helsinki.
in 1997 sverre fehn was awarded the pritzker architecture prize
