referring to reyner banham's essay ' a home is not a house' penezić & rogina architects created a digital
installation which brings light to banham's theories regarding the complexities of our homes and the numerous
systems and services that they encompass. to function, our homes contain so much hardware and mechanics,
those parts could almost stand on their own without the shell of a house. this raises light to the point that
architecture is neither primarily a shelter, nor a condition but serves as an interface between the nomadic dweller
and her/his immediate surroundings: the natural, the mechanical and the digital. their installation, 'urban jungle'
introduces these three main principles through a series of elements; classical - to provide shelter,
mechanical - to condition and digital as a medium for communication.
the installation consists of eight sets of units. the first set of units illustrate architecture as shelter. these are
classically constructed enclosures that provide protection, privacy and isolation. the second set of units illustrate
architecture as condition. these are integrated mechanical life conditioning pieces of equipment often known as
standard of living packages that enable us to live comfortably. they are driven by the super ego. the final unit
contains digitally controlled fibers that act as an interface between users and environments and act as a means
of generating interconnectivity.
the presumed movement of units essentially enables them to rearrange the total functional screen of activities
by enlarging their capacity of appropriation. matrices pixelated by these reconsiderations, should be inhabitable
with the potential to domesticate items of a technological nature in such a way that we can feel at home
in the modern world.
