francine houben, founder of mecanoo architects, has received the cityscape architectural award for the design of the national performing arts center in kaohsiung, taiwan. the theme of the prize is ‘design for an emerging world’ and the building has been awarded for its expressive design, integration of the complex into the surrounding park, advanced theatre design and technical innovation and the design’s response to the subtropical climate of the city of kaohsiung. construction of the building is to begin in december 2008 and will open its doors in 2012.
