‘calligraphic house’ by yu-tung liu

next-gene 20 at the venice architecture biennale was an exhibition of twenty contemporary architecture projects from taipei, taiwan. exhibiting are international as well as local taiwanese architects. included is curator of the exhibition, yu-tung liu who is presenting his project ‘calligraphic house’ which looks to the ancient art form and the linear sensibility of calligraphy as a starting point.

for liu, the history of architecture to human beings can be seen as a history of development of form and space, thoughts represented by lines, planes and volumes. the lines of his ‘calligraphic house’ can be followed from its surroundings on the snowy mountain top, extending over fu-lon beach and moving into the contouring lines of the site becoming one with nature. its backdrop looks much like a chinese landscape painting as the structure stands like a monochromatic calligraphic ink painting. venice architecture biennale 08: next gene 20 yu tung liu the lines which make-up the design speak to the traditional art form of calligraphy image from ‘next-gene 20’ exhibition catalogue
