‘eschmarke’ is a mixed-use retail project by the dutch architecture firm s333. the award-winning firm designed
the building using pre-fabricated elements to keep coasts low. the building is located in the small dutch town
of eschmarke which is near the city of enschede. the structure boasts 27 dwellings and a large retail section.
the site needed to balance the private and public elements while maintaining a simple plan. the architects
solved this by placing the private parking above the shops and linking the residential portion to the street
via walkways. the spiraling ramp lends the building its peaked corner form and tapered sides. public parking
and access to all the shops is spread around the building’s edge.
