ninetree village in hangzhou, china

david chipperfield architects have announced the completion of their first two projects in china, the ninetree village
and liangzhu culture museum in hangzhou.

ninetree village is located in hangzhou, located in southeastern china. it is in a small valley near the
qiang tang river, surrounded by a dense bamboo forest. the buildings adapt to the beautiful topography
of the land in which they sit, creating a continuous flow of space. each of the residential buildings are located in a
small clearing, surrounded by the newly planted trees. there is a clubhouse with an outdoor pool situated on the
northernmost point of the area in the narrowest part of the valley. it follows the irregular shape of the steep slope
of the hill where it is located, creating somewhat of a retaining wall for the property. the residences are connected
by an underground car park, making the site vehicle-free aboveground.

'liangzhu culture museum' consists of four bar-formed volumes

the liangzhu culture museum is home to a collection of archaeological finds celebrating liangzhu culture
or jade culture (circa 3000 BC). it forms the northern tip of the liangzhu cultural village which is a newly created
park town near hangzhou. set on a lake, the building is connected to the park by bridges. the sculptural quality
of the building reveals itself as visitors slowly approach the museum through the park landscape.
the structure is composed of four bar-formed volumes which are made from iranian travertine. courtyards within,
serve as areas of rest, contemplation and calm.
