cranes bringing the mast into place, while the elliptical base is still being constructed

one of the most important phases of construction of the khan shatyr entertainment centre in kazhakstan, has been completed. the 150 metre-high tripod mast which weighs 2,000 tonnes, was brought into place by four cranes over a span of two weeks. intended to be a new civic focus for the city of astana, the tent-like cable net structure is clad in ETFE (fluorocarbno-based polymer) which allows light to flow into interior spaces below. the tower rises out of an elliptical base which will house an urban-scale park, shops, cafes as well as a spa, sports centre and indoor beach.
